Weekly All-Star Team - Week 1
Rather than focus on a single batter and pitcher of the week, I will be compiling an All-Star team based solely on one week's performance.
C - Salvador Perez - 6-13, 4 HR, 2B, 4 RBI, 4 R, 2 BB, SO
The catching position was not particularly close. Although each of Salvy's dingers was a solo shot, he couldn't help that the rest of his team's offense was anemic.
1B - DJ LeMahieu - 7-18, 1 HR, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R, BB, 3 SO
This was a tight race between DJ and Freddie Freeman. The two matched each other in nearly every counting stat. The biggest difference was DJ having two more hits and two less HBP. We need production from the first base position!
2B - Jeff McNeil - 6-16, 3B, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 SO
Another one-two race, Neil McJeff edged out Ketel Marte with a slight edge in rate stats and his 1.000 wF%.
3B - Gio Urshela - 6-16, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, SO
Third base was so tight that this section was re-written four times with three different winners. Gio finally earned the nod despite having the lowest slugging because he played the best defense and led the group in base hits.
SS - Andrelton Simmons - 6-14, 2B, 2 RBI, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 SO
Shortstop is expected to have quite a few silver slugger contenders this season, but Simmons wasn't in any of the preseason conversations. He earns the nod in week 1, though, with a .444 wOBA and a .900 wF%.
LF - Ian Happ - 7-14, 2 HR, 3 2B, 7 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 SO
Happ was murdering baseballs this week with five extra base hits, a slugging over 1.100 and a ridiculous .698 wOBA. He let one of four x-chances drop, but he's not being paid for his glove.
CF - Mike Trout - 4-15, 2 HR, 3B, 3 RBI, 6 R, 3 BB, 6 SO
It's the return of the king in center. Rookie, Andrew Stevenson, gave him a run for his money, but Trout makes the squad with a perfect 3-3 in CF and 7 runs produced.
RF - Ronald Acuna Jr - 5-14, HR, 4 2B, 2 RBI, 5 R, 4 BB, 9 SO
I finally get a homer pick with right field. Acuna and Tapia each got on base at a .500 clip, but the power pushed Acuna ahead.
DH - Eric Hosmer - 3-11, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, 3 SO
The most underwhelming position of all, Eric Hosmer led the designated hitters. He hit a couple dingers so you can't complain too much, I guess.
P #1 - Adbert Alzolay - 6.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 10 SO
A follower for the Black Bears, Adbert pitched six dominant innings this week and even earned a win. His -0.53 FIP propelled him to the top spot.
P #2 - Corbin Burnes - 7.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 13 SO, 1 BB
The free pass was the only thing keeping him behind Alzolay despite still having a negative FIP. Burnes was lights out for Milwaukee this week.
P #3 - Dylan Bundy - 7.0 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 14 SO, 1 BB
Bundy had a solid first start for Dallas, striking out 14 batters in seven innings.
P #4 - Clayton Kershaw - 8.0 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 10 SO, 1 BB
Kershaw had the benefit of a eight runs from his offense, but didn't end up needing any of them. A fantastic start for the Birds of War #2 starter.
P #5 Devin Williams - 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 10 SO, 3 BB
Rounding out the weekly pitching staff is another follower. Devin Williams is expected to rack up over 100 IP and if he stays half this effective it spells disaster for Dinger Central.
