Monthly All-Trash Team - Month 1
Josef's take on an All-Star team based on month 1 performances
Tired of seeing the same guys appear in the news feed? Ooh, Jacob deGrom is still good at baseball and Devin Williams struck a dude out while all of Cal's players hit 10 home runs. You won't find any of that here.
The players on this team are PROUD starters in the SBa. They grind, day in and day out, to earn a spot on this list. One bad performance is not enough to earn the prestigious honor of being named to the Trash Team, no. These are people who not only take up roster spots, but are given actual playing time for some reason. Maybe after this article goes live they might lose some of that, so I apologize to their wives who rely on that WARa salary income.
Without further adieu, I present the Month 1 All-Trash Team:
C - Travis d'Arnaud, QC - 11/44, 11 Ks, .250/.277/.432
If his .708 OPS weren't enough, d'Arnaud allowed an astounding 13/15 baserunners to reach second base via steal. He may as well be named Travis d'Erek.
1B - Ryan Mountcastle, BSG - 17/62, 19 Ks, .274/.348/.419
The Trash Team's clear cleanup hitter, Mountcastle honestly did not have a horrid statline. It wasn't good but it wasn't terrible. First base is just pretty stacked and he gave up a hit+error on his one x-check of the month.
2B - Nick Madrigal, BSG - 13/50, 11 Ks, .260/.302/.300
When you are supposed to do one thing, NOT strike out, and you strike out 11 times with a .602 OPS, you're gonna have a bad time.
3B - Kyle Farmer, VA - 4/23, 4 Ks, .174/.269/.174
Remember, he is being put into the lineup on purpose. This also isn't a Lindor situation where you put up with those stats because of defense as he's allowed 3 hits and an error on three x-checks for a wF% of .083. Maybe he should stick to farming.
SS - Jose Iglesias, VA - 16/66, 9 Ks, .242/.254/.303
There may have been worse statlines at short than Iglesias, but when you're kept at the cost of a first round pick and can't hit OR field (6 hits and an error on 16 attempts)...
LF - Franmil Reyes, TK - 6/38, 19 Ks, .158/.238/.184
Fortunately for the Kaiju, the ball has yet to find its way to "Franimal" in the field. Unfortunately for the Kaiju, he still gets to bat with regularity. Any time your three-true-outcome slugger is slugging is lower than his low OBP you're in for a long season.
CF - Aaron Hicks, VA - 2/21, 5 Ks, .095/.269/.095
The third Angel on the Trash Team, Hicks leads the league in trashing average. He's helped produce four whole runs on the season and has 3 errors in 8 attempts. Not great, Ryan. Not great.
RF - Ben Gamel, LMM - 8/26, 8 Ks, .308/.333/.423
Honestly, not terrible. He can bat third above Mountcastle. Definitely not inspiring, but compared to the rest of these yahoos, you take offense where you can get it.
DH - Max Muncy, DAL - 4/25, 3 Ks, .160/.276/.280
Sub .600 OPS out of a guy whose sole purpose is hitting kind of defeats the purpose of having a guy whose sole purpose is hitting. He doesn't strike out much though, maybe the Geese will trade something for him to teach Madrigal how to lay off the high heat.
Starting Pitcher - Spencer Turnbull, FF - 16 IP, 19 H, 15 ER, 1.688 WHIP, 8.44 ERA
This would have been Alex Young were he not already mercifully DFA'd. Turnbull was given an opportunity in week 4 despite 13 runs allowed in his first two starts of the season and it paid off, only giving up 2 more runs to keep his name just off the Top 10 in runs allowed. Remember Jack, you're paying this guy 3.23 WARa.
Relief Pitcher - Jose Cisnero, LV - 11 IP, 18 H, 13 ER, 2.364 WHIP, 10.64 ERA
Cisnero is for some reason leading the Bandits in appearances, which may explain their 6-10 record. If eleven innings with an ERA north of 10 weren't enough, he has been given the ball in leverage situations! Not just a mop up man, Cisnero is 0-2 with at least one blown lead.
Dishonorable Mentions
SP - Justus Sheffield, SPP - 20.1 IP, 24 H, 15 ER, 2.090 WHIP, 6.72 ERA
RP- Seth Lugo, GLA - 12.1 IP, 21 H, 14 ER, 2.066 WHIP, 10.41 ERA
C - Kurt Suzuki, VA - 7/29, 5 Ks, .241/.313/.276
1B - Alec Bohm, PBW - 20/52, 13 Ks, .385/.448/.442
2B - Mark Mathias, WV - 8/28, 5 Ks, .286/.276/.429
3B - Austin Nola, DEN - 6/33, 10 Ks, .182/.289/.212
SS - Tim Anderson, JJG - 10/38, 6 Ks, .263/.317/.263
LF - Adam Haseley, VA - 3/26, 7 Ks, .115/.179/.154
CF - Randal Grichuk, TK - 5/22, 5 Ks, .227/.269/.409
RF - Charlie Blackmon, SPP - 17/60, 15 Ks, .283/.317/.367
DH - Harold Castro, WWW - 8/32, 14 Ks, .250/.368/.281
