Midseason Trash
Josef takes out the trash after the first half of the season.
C - Roberto Perez, TK - 13/92, 30 Ks, .141/.225/.272
Robo has been elite defensively for the Kaiju, pacing the league is caught stealing percentage, but is a sub .500 OPS from an everyday starter really worth it?
1B - Hunter Dozier, GLA - 13/97, 34 Ks, .134/.328/.206
Hunter Dozier's offense has been eerily similar to Robo's, but without the elite CS rate. When Dozier is up, the Unicorns may as well be hoping for a pitcher card at this point.
2B - Andy Young, LMM - 14/123, 51 Ks, .114/.370/.211
He may not have the worst OPS out of second basemen, but that .114 batting average cannot be ignored. To top off his two-true-outcomes (walks and outs), he only has an .821 weighted fielding percentage.
3B - Josh Donaldson, LMM - 23/129, 43 Ks, .178/.307/.357
The Los Muertos have another player hitting below the Mendoza Line. While this seemingly has not hurt their record, it's still trash.
SS - Paul DeJong, PBW - 20/101, 32 Ks, .198/.264/.228
An OPS below .500 means you're one of the best defenders, right? Not if you're Paul DeJong, who is also has a weighted fielding below 90% at the most important defensive position in the league.
LF - David Peralta, WWW - 36/186, 54 Ks, .194/.231/.253
Despite two monthly trash awards, Franmil Reyes avoids the first half recycling bin after a big week 11, and instead Wonderwolf Peralta takes the can. Batting below .200 and an OPS under .500? Oof, ouch, owie.
CF - Lorenzo Cain, SPP - 43/161, 29 Ks, .267/.322/.329
Defensive specialist LoCain is an outstanding 21/21 in fielding checks, but without his speed being useful on the basepaths, a .651 OPS is tough to stomach when you're paying over 5 WARa.
RF - Mike Yastrzemski, BSG - 19/130, 47 Ks, .146/.226/.269
Season 5 Yaz is definitely not the Season 3-4 Yaz, as he's suffered perhaps the biggest fall from grace between sets for players that still have a solid card. He is my current favorite for "underperformer of the year", with just an atrocious slash line to go along with a top 30 salary.
DH - Harold Castro, WWW - 38/112, 29 Ks, .339/.408/.420
When most people think about a Designated Hitter, they picture a slugger who can't play the field. With Harold Castro, you get... zero home runs. He has hit nine doubles, but that's only lead to 13 total runs contributed. If you're paying 3 WAR for your DH, they need to be a bigger contributor with the bat.
SP1 - Kyle Hendricks, FF - 48.2 IP, 65 H, 38 ER, 1.598 WHIP, 7.10 ERA
This pains me as a Cubs fan, but Hendricks has been downright awful this season. The change in scenery from Dallas to Florida has not done enough, as he's still got an ERA north of 7 and he's only had three starts that he hasn't given up at least 3 runs.
SP2 - Steven Brault, QC - 44.2 IP, 43 H, 33 ER, 1.787 WHIP, 6.72 ERA
Without his busted bat to make up for it, Brault hasn't been rosterable this season, but the Questants continue to send him out there, knowing he will give up almost two baserunners an inning. He's had ten starts, but is averaging under 5 innings each.
SP3 - Justus Sheffield, SPP - 60.2 IP, 64 H, 39 ER, 1.811 WHIP, 5.83 ERA
Sheffield has an even higher WHIP than Brault, though the Parrots have done a better job navigating around it. The most impressive part of this trash season is that his week five start was 8 innings of one-hit ball in a Phillip Humber-esque shocking performance of the year.
RP1 - Michael Lorenzen, MKE - 31.2 IP, 35 H, 28 ER, 1.891 WHIP, 8.08 ERA
I'm losing steam on writing things. Lorenzen sans bat is bad.
RP2 - Jonathan Loaisiga, SBB - 25. IP, 33 H, 22 ER, 1.720 WHIP, 7.92 ERA
Johnny Lasagna is still and will always be an S-Tier name, however it seems like it should also have been left in the oven and in the minors.
RP3 - Mark Melancon, TK - 11.1 IP, 18 H, 10 ER, 1.982 WHIP, 8.11 ERA
Barely hitting the qualifying innings due to a stint in the minors, he does seem to have turned it around some, but that first quarter at an ERA over 54 was just too much to overcome to avoid the bin.
